Degree Requirements

In today's highly competitive global environment, the effective deployment of information technology has become the key to business success. New applications of information technology strike at the heart of what management does and how organizations are structured and compete. In many respects these applications are redefining the nature of work and its organization.

Bachelor of Business Administration in Computer Information Systems

There is a continuing shortage of specialists and managers with the combination of business and technology skills needed to bring about this reshaping of American industry. The purpose of the CIS major in the B.B.A. program is to produce graduates who are able to fill this need. Students will learn how to combine their general business knowledge with the latest software engineering tools and techniques to create information systems which allow organizations to compete in the global marketplace. Graduates will be prepared for careers in a variety of areas such as programming, systems development, database administration, network deployment and support, and consulting.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a Concentration in Computer Information Systems

The Department of Computer Information Systems cooperates with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, College of Arts and Sciences, Georgia State University, in offering a concentration in information systems associated with the degree Bachelor of Science with a major in mathematics. This program is described under the offerings of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in the 1994-1995 Georgia State University General Catalog.

Consult the "B.B.A. Degree Requirements" in the GSU catalog for courses that will satisfy this requirement.

Required Major Courses: CIS 330, CIS 331 , CIS 332 , and CIS 498. In addition, students must take two of the following four programming courses: CIS 321, CIS 322, CIS 326, CIS 327. The two remaining courses may be any 300 or 400-level CIS course except CIS 302. Note that CIS 498 can be taken only after completion of all required 300-level BA and CIS courses.

Other Required Course: Math 220 as general elective with a minimum grade of "C" before any upper-level CIS course is taken.

Other Requirements: (1) Transfer credit toward the CIS major courses may not be more than five years old at time the student enrolls. Students who reenroll after an absence of more than two years may retain major credit only for coursework that is less than five years old at the time of reenrollment; this includes GSU credit and transfer credit. (2) Transfer credit is not granted for CIS 326.
