Introduction to Computer-Based Information Systems. (5)
Prerequisite: AC 201, CSP: I.
This course provides an introduction to computer and information systems concepts including hardware, software, databases, data communications, and business applications. The student is introduced to methods of determining user requirements and developing application systems using databases and fourth-generation languages.
AC 201. Principles of Accounting I. (5)
Prerequisite: none.
This course provides an introduction to accounting as a device for reporting business activity. The underlying principles of accounting are studied in addition to the construction and interpretation of financial statements.
Computing Skill Prerequisites (CSP)
Notice: As this catalog went to press, the CBA faculty was considering a proposal to revise the computing skills prerequisites for its courses. Information on the status of the CSP revisions will be available from the CBA Office of Academic Assistance.
The CSPs listed for a particular course are those that are commonly required for all sections of the course. Individual instructors may use additional CSPs in their classes by announcing the requirement on the syllabus and providing guidance for students as to how they can acquire the additional CSP knowledge.
CSP I. Basic Microcomputing Skills
Introduction to the PC and its components ,turning on the PC, loading DOS, using the disk directory, formatting disks, disk handling, copying disks, copying files, erasing files, renaming files, loading BASIC and returning to DOS, loading programs, rebooting, and printing from the screen.
CSP II. Beginning Microcomputing Spreadsheet Skills
Loading the program, using the menus and using the manual; moving around the spreadsheet and creating spreadsheets; entering formulas, values, and text; range commands, such as format, copy, and erase; inserting and deleting columns and rows ,totalling columns and rows, changing column width; editing contents of cells; saving and retrieving files; printing the worksheet; simple graphing and printing the graph.
CSP III. Intermediate Microcomputer Spreadsheet Skills
Lotus functions, such as financial, statistical, and mathematical; enhanced graphs; database functions; cell protection; recalculation.
CSP IV. Beginning Microcomputer Database Skills
Loading the program and creating databases; using the manuals; entering data, editing data, and adding and deleting records; listing, querying, and reporting from the database.
